When a city does a road project that results in a new traffic pattern for drivers to follow, it’s common to see a road sign that says, “New Traffic Pattern.” As we continue to study the Gospel of Mark, it’s clear that Jesus is inviting us to use a new traffic pattern in our lives. In Mark 12:28-44 Jesus teaches on three subjects – the greatest commandment, the divinity and humanity of the Messiah, and giving. When we bought our home there was a kumquat tree in our backyard. It was planted between two other trees that were taking up all the light. This was causing the the kumquat tree to struggle for life, and we ended up removing it from our yard. In Mark 11 we read that Jesus told a fig tree it would never bear fruit again. This destructive miracle was a sign to Israel that they had failed to bear fruit. Jesus’ ensuing actions in the Temple were a sign of Israel’s internal corruptness. Being blind would have hindered his lifestyle, income, and ability for relationship, but that all changes when he stands in the presence of Jesus and asks for healing. In Mark 10:1-31 Jesus addresses these different topics, and the common thread is that through Jesus, all things are possible. A marriage that seems impossible is possible through Jesus. Overcoming pain from divorce is possible through Jesus. Parenting is possible. Leaving an insurmountable sin, is impossible in your own strength, but totally possible through Jesus.
